MATERIALIZED METALLICS
Metallics feature strongly in Neuro Aesthetics. They are cut slashed, morphed, pleated, printed or melted. Objects are given materialised skins. More of our time is spent in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, in places that provide fully immersive digital experiences. In this way, we are entering a computer-generated world that obscures the real world. There is no longer a distinction between the virtual and the real worlds; they have coalesced into a single, layered reality resulting in multi-dimensional materials that glow and shimmer.
LIGHT EFFECTS
Materials absorb and reflect light, while there are also luminous, glow-in-the-dark materials. Surfaces have the appearance of being 3D rendered. Shapes are blob shaped rather than straight and geometrical. Now that everything has become visible and exposed on the Internet, a mystifying layer is entering into the digital world. What should be exposed and what left concealed? How can we blur the boundary between these exposed and hidden aspects? Neuro Aesthetics materials are modest in character; they can be layered and hide their identity. The materials reflect an elegant and abstract genderless aesthetic.
OTHER WORLDS
Materials that ostensibly do not fit together and come from two worlds create a clash. Surfaces are morphing; some materials are inspired by skins and Instagram filters. We enter a world without regulations and limits, a wild zone where anything goes. Materials challenge our ideas of taste and functionality, inflatable surfaces, 3D surfaces and foamy textures abound. What might transpire when virtual reality allows two or more physical worlds to coalesce?
GLOWING
The materials of Neuro-Aesthetics glow, metallics have a greenish-purple shine. The materials of Neuro-Aesthetics are smart, self-thinking or reactive. Materials evoke emotions and feelings and can change the mood you are in. Measurable things, such as location or materiality, do not apply to the virtual world. Environments loose their materiality, it is more about colours and experience than it is about materials.
