Dialogue

Interconnectedness is the second colour and material story featured in Colour Flow 2024. It views design as a dialogue between creators, curators, makers, materials and users. Interconnectedness focuses on researching and acquiring knowledge and passing on the stories surrounding the origin and journey of a product that people wear or use. Stories also include people’s lived experiences. A product is a dialogue between history, time, people and materials, and design is more than the sum of its countless parts.

Seeds of our ancestors

People do not stand alone in time; knowledge and seeds of our ancestors are involved in the colours, dyeing methods, symbols, materials and structures that we use. Voices from the past and present are connected in a design; it is the sum of its innumerable parts. Interconnectedness reflects the importance of respecting human connection in all kinds of ways and nurturing and appreciating what we make and use from the Earth.

Archives of the future

The Interconnectedness colour story calls for a sensitivity to history. It views colour schemes, the use of materials and craft techniques as archives recording where we have come from and how we have evolved. Archiving is the process of composing, with the opportunity to create the future while discovering the past. AI can contribute to this process and offer new perspectives on the future of design. Archives of cultural expressions are not a static thing, if these compilations of materials and knowledge can interact with and influence each other, parallel forms can arise and form new meanings and expressions. The function of design is extensive; it involves being a bridge-maker, boundary-breaker and a builder of worlds. Preserve ‘small and playful’ values with the creation of small, fast and experimental design projects and collections.

The Palette

Tradition with modernity

The Interconnectedness palette is full of warmth and expression, using colours that blend tradition with modernity. The colours are unique and can be used as solids; mixed together, they form a lively and tightly woven family. The palette is a dialogue of colours with different tones of orange and red alongside a muted brown and black, a neutral and a lilac colour. Orange is a vibrant colour representing positive change and development. Together with brown, blue and neutral, it gives a grounded feel to the palette. The two blues harmonise the warm tones, and the lilac shade stands for society and the diversity of cultures, languages and traditions. The red tones symbolise people and their sense of belonging to their culture, origin and roots.

 Key Colour

The Age key colour is a grounding tone that makes reference to the soil we all live on and humanity’s shared common ground.

Colourways

Bi-colour

The bi-colour combinations play with neutrals. The neutrals have a grounding effect and make the combinations confident and sophisticated.

Basic values

The Paper and Depth colour are softened by the other tones, making the combination more fluid and warm.

Depth

The colours create a sense of depth. They mimic the effect of light and 3D shapes in colour.

United contrast

A new graphic language that plays with contrast. The colours work together to create unity with tension.
