Reconnect with nature

The cyclical processes of planet Earth inform the third story of Colour Flow 2024, called Renewal. Renewal raises awareness of the fragility of our planet and expresses the idea that this unique, indescribably beautiful planet that we live on can be seen as one living, breathing organism. The colours and materials are inspired by nature, and the ultimate goal is to reconnect with nature and natural processes. For design, this means that everything we use renews itself and that the concept of waste becomes eradicated. The key shape representing Renewal is the circle, reflecting the cyclic motion of all processes in nature.

Emptying our lives

Renewal focuses on creating low-carbon lifestyles and limiting environmental impact; it adopts a modest attitude towards design. Research goes into creating low-impact constructions and determining what to prioritise in choices of materials and colours. Renewal involves radically altering how we view our lives on Earth and encourages us to take steps towards emptying and paring down our lives and creating lots of space for nature. This lifestyle change has an impact on every aspect, from eating and cleaning to what we wear. Renewal champions a zero-waste culture, involving a life without packaging and plastic, instead bringing one’s own container to the shop. Renewal focuses on the simple things in life, on ‘less but better’, and on emphasising the art of living.

No impact

In order to overcome the climate crisis, we are all called upon to do our best work as designers, always driven by curiosity and excited about a sustainable future that we can help create. All elements of the design process need to be examine for their environmental impact; colours and materials should be selected so as to minimize this impact. Materials can be used undyed. Study the use of plant, waste and bacterial pigments as natural sources of colour and learn how to enhance the colour intensity and stability of natural pigments. Carbon neutral colours require a collaborative and transparent approach. Chemical-free dyeing processes that also use less water are small steps forward.

About the palette

The palette of Renewal features a range of greens. This colour will continue to feature predominantly throughout the next decade as a symbol for the urgently needed green transition of our lives. It is also the colour representing life. The palette’s greens express the tenderness and fragility of nature. There are also two yellow tones; one a bright and energetic yellow and the other a light tone. There is an eggshell white and a range of neutrals and browns. Blue is absent in this palette; the higher temperatures become, the more water evaporates, so blue as a symbol of water is absent.
